About the Rundle Lantern

Launched on 24 October, 2008, the Rundle Lantern is a major initiative of Adelaide City Council, and is located on the Rundle Street UPark at the corner of Pulteney and Rundle Streets in the City's East End.

Best viewed from Adelaide’s iconic Rundle Mall, the Lantern's unique designs are driven by computer software that showcase colourful and dynamic moving imagery and digital art works by night and creates a contemporary architectural experience during the day.

The Lantern serves as a major City attraction and relies on the continual development and display of exciting new content. It provides partnership opportunities with artists in the local community, and festival/event organisers in the City.

Operating Times

Solar Energy

The Rundle Lantern is 100% green-powered and the light show is carbon neutral. The Lantern's LEDs use less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs and the lifespan of an LED lamp is 100 times that of a conventional bulb. The panels are installed at an angle to allow 50% air flow throughout the floors of the UPark for ventilation.

Technical Specifications

The Lantern is nine levels high, at 1,066 square metres (covering almost 40% of the building). It is made up of 748 square panels which are activated by an LED (light emitting diode) system.

Contribute

The Lantern is available for artists and developers to develop and screen artistic content. Keep track of this website or follow the Lantern on Twitter for upcoming workshops and calls to artists.
